Default Packages

The following software is included with the default installation of Ubuntu.

GIMP Image Editor

The GIMP is a powerful image editing application and is the default image editor for Ubuntu. It will happily open and save to most image file formats and offers a host of useful features, plus the scope to add more using its plug-in system. Filters such as Motion Blur, Cubism and Predator make advanced image editing fun and easy. The GIMP opens several windows by default, which act as 'toolboxes' from which you can tweak settings and select tools to work on your image with. For more information, tutorials and extensions, visit [http://www.gimp.org the GIMP website] or read TheGimpHowto.

F-Spot

F-Spot is a personal photo manager. Import your pictures from your hard drive, a digital camera or even an iPod and F-Spot will quickly import them, ready for you to view. You can tag and categorise your photos, make a Photo CD, export to the online Flickr service, perform basic colour-correction and editing, and much more. Towards the top of the main F-Spot window is a timeline - just drag the slider to view the photos you took around a specific date. There is a fullscreen mode and a slideshow feature for showing your photos to others, and a full image metatdata display for the technically-minded. You can find out more on the [http://www.f-spot.org/Main_Page F-Spot website].

attachment:info.png XSane can also be used from within The GIMP; just click File -> Acquire -> XSane to scan directly into an image.

It is designed to make reading documents a simple and hassle-free experience, and has intuitive previewing, indexing and searching capabilities. You can even view documents in full-screen or presentation format, where each page is displayed like a slide in a slideshow. Details can be found on the [http://www.gnome.org/projects/evince/ Evince website].
