Introduction
People are needed mostly for writing and editing, but there are many other ways of making a useful contribution. For example, simply pointing out errors (such as typos, grammar and spelling, and technical errors) is an extremely useful way to help.
- Fix spelling and formatting errors
- Simplify the structure of long pages
- Organize untidy pages so that they are easy to read
- Fix broken links
- Add new documentation to the wiki
This page lists the various areas of the Ubuntu Wiki that need WikiTeam and general community attention.
Before you start contributing to the wiki, you should read the Wiki Guide for information on how to edit pages correctly. See the Wiki Cleanup page for tips on cleaning-up wiki pages.
Converting Categories to Tags
This is the perfect place to get started.
Before we proceed cleaning up our Documentation, we need to see what we have and make everything match. The Documentation Team asks that you please follow the items listed on the Tag To-Do List. While this is very easy, it is a very time consuming process, and needs to get done. The more hands that we have to help out, the faster it can be done, and the sooner we can move on to more pressing issues.
Moving Documentation From Main Wiki
You can help move documentation pages that get erroneously created on the Main Ubuntu Wiki here to the Community Wiki instead.
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CategoryDocumentation for more details!
Cleanup Pages
The pages listed on CategoryCleanup are in need of a thorough cleanup.
These pages either:
- Do not follow the standards of documentation,
- Contain incorrect or out-of-date information, or
- Are formatted incorrectly.
Feel free to dive in. Tidy up a page and remove the Cleanup tag!
If you find a page that needs to be cleaned up, DO NOT add it here. Follow the instructions as laid out on the Tag page.
Expansion
Want to contribute your knowledge?
As an open source Wiki, we have a wide range of individuals working to help expand our knowledgebase, and we want your help.
Check out the list of articles with the Needs Expansion tag for articles that are formatted correctly, but simply need to be expanded to cover the full topic.
Restructure
The following have multiple articles not only need to be cleaned up/formatted, but also need to be combined and/or organized.
ISDN Networking (ie: IsdnHowto, HisaxButNotMISDN, etc.)
MythTV (ie:InstallMythOnUbuntu)
- VMWare
- Postfix
- Kernel
SATAHowto - still needed? AFAIK, SATA works normally, except for with some installations, but that can be covered in the installation guides.
- Nvidia Drivers page - Needs to be updated for a special how-to for some individual cards.
Reorganization
Some ideas about how best to organize the vast amount of documentation on the wiki can be found at WikiToDo/Organisation
Forum Integration
There are lots of good guides posted on the forums every day in the howto section. Often there is material that isn't covered in this wiki. Bringing guides from there into the wiki structure can be really useful by making them:
- simpler
- concise
- friendlier
- organized
However, be sure to get the author's permission to release the document into the wiki before you import it. For more details, read the forum page.
Deletion
Pages to be marked/nominated for deletion should use the Deletion Tag.
However, these pages can only be deleted after links to them have been removed first. Be sure to check there to see if you can help remove links to help speed up the page deletion process.
