From time to time you will need to convert media from one format to another. This is sometimes done to use more free and less patent offending codecs or it is sometimes done for compatibility.

FFMpeg is a video and audio converter which can be installed from the Universe repository. It is a command line application.


WinFF is a simple graphical front-end interface for FFMpeg. It can be installed (Lucid - 10.04LTS or newer releases). You can search for WinFF in the Ubuntu Software Center or install it using

sudo apt-get install winff


Avidemux is a video editor for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks.

  • sudo apt-get install avidemux.
