Introduction

This page is intended to provide a brief overview of popular email clients available for Ubuntu, as well as links to relevant articles and documentation.

Thunderbird

Overview

Thunderbird is an email client created by Mozilla. It is designed with speed, security and ease of use in mind. It is the default desktop mail client for Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) and newer. It includes support for a variety of protocols and webmail clients, and includes features such as an RSS reader. Firefox-style add-ons are available in the add-ons menu, including features like calendar support.

Evolution

Overview

Evolution was the default email client for Ubuntu releases up to and including 11.04, and it is tightly integrated with the GNOME desktop. Some of Evolution's features are:

  • An integrated e-mail program with an address book, calendars and tasks.
  • IMAP, POP3, and SMTP support
  • Intelligent Junk Mail control
  • Calendar integration with the gnome-panel calendar.
  • Contact sharing with other software such as Pidgin
  • Supports WebDAV and iCal web calendars
  • Multiple account management
  • GPG key and certificate storage
  • Plugin support (including MAPI plugins for interfacing with Microsoft Exchange)

KMail

Overview

KMail is the default email client for the K Desktop Environment (KDE) and Kubuntu, and is a component of the Kontact personal information manager. Some of its features are:

  • IMAP, POP3 and SMTP support
  • Secure logons with SSL, TLS or DIGEST-MD5
  • Signing and encrypting of emails (both PGP and GnuPG are supported)
  • Reading of HTML mails
  • Anti-spam functions
  • Supports all international character sets
  • Powerful search and filter functions
  • Spell checking
  • Imports folders from many other mail clients
  • Highly integrated with other components
