Emulators allow you to run software designed for another operating system and/or hardware. An obvious application of this is to run popular games. In addition to popular games console emulators, there are compatibility layers like Wine that allow Windows software to be used.
1. Windows Games
Some Windows games can run on Ubuntu, but they need either an emulator or a compatibility layer.
1.1. Windows Emulators
WINE - A completely free compatability layer that works for some games. |
Cedega - A commercial compatability layer. This costs money, but works for more games than WINE. (No longer available)
DOSBox - A x86 emulator with Tandy/Herc/CGA/EGA/VGA/SVGA graphics, sound and DOS, enables playing old DOS games.
